How many roses to cover an abyss #4: His Side of Town (One)

His Side of Town (part one)

At the beginning of his interrogation, which began at 11:46 a.m. on April 21, 2016, Meron Bekure, Prince’s personal assistant, explains to the detectives of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office the internal layout of Paisley Park, so that they can move freely during the search of the compound, which begins that same morning.

Prince has been declared dead for nearly two hours.

When Meron comes to describe the part of the building where Prince lived, he calls it “his side of town.”

The entire Paisley was a city unto itself, of which, in daily life, Prince occupied only a portion — his portion.

It wasn’t even the most luxurious part.

Let us focus for a moment on the room where Prince had been sleeping for a long time: the Green Room. It was preceded by a vestibule, which led into the room itself.

We often imagine the rooms of musicians and actors as places defined by luxury — and very often they are. The spaces in which Prince lived were structured with this in mind. Prince was, after all, someone who had spent the first part of his life in poverty, and in some areas of his home his attention to luxury came through clearly.

Not in the Green Room, however.

Its name, of course, derived from the color of its walls. A color intended to calm and relax. Prince paid close attention to details like this.

The Green Room is bare. There are no luxury furnishings to be seen. To the investigators’ eyes it appears almost cluttered — many objects are placed directly on the floor or stacked on tables. There are three glass tables, arranged along three sides of the room. The bed, simple and without a headboard, stands against the west wall. To the right of the bed, a nightstand. Next to one of the glass tables, against the north wall, a chair. Facing the bed, on the east wall, there is a large television, at that moment covered by a dark protective cover.
